Born and raised in the small town of Keri Keri, New Zealand, Charles began his dance training at the age of twelve. His early teachers were Alan Barry and Tess Graham who encouraged him to pursue his dream. He also received additional training at the New Zealand School of Dance as a junior associate and at the Auckland City Ballet Centre. Charles was one of only two male finalists selected in the prestigious Alana Haines Australasian Awards in 2001. At age 14 he was accepted into The Australian Ballet School, where he was bestowed with numerous awards, scholarships and bursaries. He also preformed with The Dancers Company on their 2005 and 2006 tours of regional Australia. Charles graduated in 2007 and joined The Australian Ballet in 2008.

Charles Thompson spent most of his childhood in the family farm's cow shed milking 600 cows a day, and now owns six racehorses with his younger brother.
