The Australian Ballet offers several work experience placements in administration and production.
Administration
The Australian Ballet offers five work experience placements to Year 10 school students each year. The placement involves assisting various departments at the head office in Melbourne, including customer services, company management, wardrobe production, merchandise and media, as well as observing the dancers in class and rehearsals. The placement culminates in attending the dress rehearsal at the State Theatre. Due to the popularity of The Australian Ballet’s work experience program, the places fill very quickly and we are not able to accept all students who apply. In fact, 2012 and 2013 are fully booked. However, if you are interested in being included on a waiting list for 2013 please contact us.
We are now accepting work experience requests for 2014.
Production
The Australian Ballet’s Production Division Wardrobe department caters for secondary and tertiary work experience placements.
Secondary students (Year 10). There are five available placements per year, taking one student at a time, each for a period of one week. Secondary students should apply during the third or fourth term of the year prior to the year the placement is being sought. Prerequisites for placement in Wardrobe include the ability to use a domestic sewing machine and to be proficient in hand sewing.
Tertiary students are accepted by application only (including relevant experience), and as required by their tertiary institution. Final year students are given preference, but placements for other year levels can also be arranged. Again there is only capacity for one placement at a time.
