The creation of a ballet is an extremely complex affair. It requires a choreographer, composer, designer and a band of dancers who are all sympathetic to the overall presentation of the work. Interplay is a programme that, more than most, relies on this magic mix of talented people, especially as each of the choreographers is working to a commissioned score. Our Music Director Nicolette Fraillon will explain to us the complexities of these creative collaborations.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan was renowned for his ability to develop the character of the roles played by his principal dancers through the sensitivity of his choreography. In Manon the five pas de deux that he has given his principal lady shows her progression from a young innocent on the brink of womanhood to her eventual destruction. This talk will look at the way that MacMillan achieves this effect and the skills that the dancers need to interpret it.
