On Thursday 11 October 2012 The Australian Ballet announced several upcoming film and television projects in collaboration with ABC1, as part of the company’s 50th birthday celebrations.
Artscape: Swan Lake – The Australian Ballet at 50 is a half-hour documentary that looks at the history of the company through the different incarnations of the classic story ballet. It features archival footage and interviews with company alumni, while also following current company members as they prepare for the opening night of the new Swan Lake by Stephen Baynes. The documentary will screen on ABC1 on Tuesday 30 October at 10pm.
Following this event is The Australian Ballet’s 50th Anniversary gala, which will be filmed on 2 November and then broadcast on ABC1 on Sunday 4 November at 3pm. Complementing the televised program is a high-definition live stream feed of the gala, which will show in regional cinemas across Australia.
Audiences will also be able to view the gala free of charge at live sites operating at Melbourne’s Federation Square, Martin Place in Sydney and Northbridge Piazza in Perth.
The motivation for the broadcast is to share the gala with as many Australians as possible, according to the Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister.
“It’s a moment where Australians can watch the documentary, watch the gala from home or go into a cinema or live site and see how far we’ve come, what we’ve achieved, and know that the future of their national ballet company is bright,” said McAllister.
