The Australian Ballet is saddened by the news of the passing of one of Australia’s great philanthropists, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE, on 5 December 2012.
Dame Elisabeth was a tireless supporter of the arts, and was particularly passionate about arts education for children, specifically donating to The Australian Ballet’s Education program, Out There – The Australian Ballet in schools.
She loved attending full-length story ballets, and always took the time to personally respond when invited to attend a performance. Dame Elisabeth imbued a love of the arts in her children and grandchildren, and was involved and engaged in the causes she supported.
The Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister, said she has left an indelible legacy that all Australians can be proud of.
“Dame Elisabeth was charming, eloquent and warm, and she often funded programs that others wouldn’t – causes that weren’t high-profile but just as necessary and important, and that is the mark of a true philanthropist. She was generous of spirit and a genuinely lovely woman. Our condolences go out to her family at this sad time.”
