On Thursday 20 September 2012 The Australian Ballet announced even more international guest artists who will appear in the company’s 50th anniversary gala season. Joining artists of The Australian Ballet will be David Hallberg, joint Principal Artist of both the Bolshoi Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet Principal Artists Dorothée Gilbert and Stéphane Bullion, Principal Artist Julie Kent from American Ballet Theatre, and Australian-born San Francisco Ballet Principal Artist Damian Smith.
Between them, they will perform excerpts from some of the world’s most famous classical ballets, from Don Quixote to Manon and Giselle.
The line-up will also include guest artists from Stuttgart Ballet, The Tokyo Ballet and the National Ballet of China.
The Australian Ballet will perform Harald Lander’s Etudes, last staged by the company in 2001. A stark yet striking work in a palette of black and white, this work impresses with its simple façade masking technically demanding choreography.
The artistic director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister, said the gala would be an unforgettable season of world-class ballet.
“It’s an incredible line-up we’ve assembled from all over the world; we’re thrilled to have artists from Paris Opera Ballet, the Bolshoi, American Ballet Theatre … the list goes on!
“It’s the best 50th birthday present we could have, and it’s our gift back to Australian audiences who will be blown away by this once-in-a-lifetime season of ballet,” said McAllister.
