In Paris, where the language of ballet was born, les étoiles are the stars, the prima ballerinas and premier danseurs of the Paris Opéra. All of France and much of the ballet world look to these select few to define the most perfect achievements in dance.
The Principal Artists of The Australian Ballet are our étoiles. They are the stars who light up our performances, lead our company and set the standards for every young aspiring dancer in Australia. Of all the thousands of students, however dedicated and talented, no more than twelve at any time will achieve the honour of being a principal artist of The Australian Ballet.
Our memories are still strongly illuminated by the dancers of times past: Kathleen Gorham, our first principal ballerina, Marilyn Jones, Marilyn Rowe, Christine Walsh, Garth Welch, Kelvin Coe, John Meehan and Steven Heathcote – all of whom helped build the tradition of ballet in Australia. The jewel is carried by the principal artists of today and will glow far into the future as new stars emerge from the footlights.
Les Etoiles is a gathering, a constellation if you like, of our closest and most dedicated friends, who come together to assist The Australian Ballet in providing the environment, the expertise and the encouragement which these dancers need to continue being what they are - Principal Artists of The Australian Ballet, Les Etoiles, our stars and yours.
Involvement as a Les Etoiles is by invitation only.
