On Thursday 29 September 2011 The Australian Ballet’s Artistic Director, David McAllister announced the promotion of eight dancers.

Reiko Hombo will become a senior artist, Chengwu Guo will be made a soloist and Brett Chynoweth, John-Paul Idaszak, Ako Kondo, Brooke Lockett, Karen Nanasca and Sharni Spencer are moving up to the position of coryphée. These promotions become effective in January 2012.

McAllister said that all eight dancers had impressed throughout the year and showed the strength of the company from the ground up.

“To promote six dancers from the corps is a testament to their remarkable talents, their passion and dedication,” said McAllister. “It’s a promising sign as we head into our 50th anniversary year in 2012 to have such a wealth of talent to draw on.”

It’s not surprising that three of the dancers promoted – Brett, Chengwu and Karen – are current nominees for the Telstra Ballet Dancer Award. The winner of the Award will be announced on the opening night of Romeo & Juliet in Sydney on December 2 and will go home $20,000 richer.

The public can vote for their favourite dancer in the People’s Choice Award; the winner takes home a $5,000 prize. Head to to make your vote count.

The Australian Ballet congratulates this talented group of young dancers as they embark on the next exciting stage of their performing careers.
